Nut & Seed Breakfast Topping

Every day I feel indecisive about what nuts and seeds to put on my oatmeal or cereal, and so I get out lots of bags of nuts and seeds and do the whole mix and match thing. It’s a big hassle.

Recently it occurred to me – what if I just made a mixture of all my favorite nuts and seeds in a big container and got ONE thing out of the fridge in the morning instead of 10? It know, it’s obvious, but this little hack is definitely making my mornings more efficient and delicious.

My favorite mix right now is a hearty mixture of each of the following:

  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pistachios
  • Sliced almonds
  • Hemp seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Flax meal
  • Pecans
  • A generous dash of cinnamon

I told you I was indecisive!

Nevertheless, this makes a lovely topper for all kinds of breakfasts.

Have fun!

How about dried coconut? Do you count that as a nut.

    • Dried coconut counts as a fat, which we don’t eat for breakfast in Bright Line Eating. Some people eat fats with breakfast on the maintenance food plan, but otherwise no. Good question!

  2. Definitely genius and defiant.

  3. Nuts are high in fat, but they don’t count as a fat in BLE? I’m new so I’m just figuring it all out! When I had nut butter in my oatmeal yesterday, I didn’t have a fat with lunch because I thought my morning protein was protein AND fat. I know the book says don’t do swaps all the time — takes the automaticity away. I’m just trying to figure out. Thanks in advance for the help. 🙂

    • Good question! You can count nuts as either protein or fat. If you count them as protein, you get 2 oz on the weight loss plan. If you count then as fat, you get 0.5 oz. We don’t eat a fat serving with breakfast so nuts count as protein with breakfast. As you said, they are calorically dense so if you choose them too often they may slow your weight loss. I eat at least 1 oz of nuts every day with no issues.

  4. I like this kind of time-saver idea, thanks! I’ve got sunflower seeds and some almonds. Going to add some more variety to the list, thanks!

  5. This has been a game changer for me too!! Such a simple idea yet soooo helpful! I was doing the same thing you were before this idea. Brilliant!

  6. Love this idea! Thanks!
