BLE-Friendly BBQ Sauce Brands

It’s feeling like summertime in the Northwest, and we are feeling BBQ season coming on!

BBQ sauce is normally loaded with sweeteners (i.e. poison). To get around this, I like to make my own Barbecue Sauce from scratch, but sometimes I also like someone else to do the work for me. Today I went on a BBQ sauce quest in the grocery store and found these four brands. All have less that 1 gram of sugar per serving, and no sugar or flour in the first three ingredients.

Even though these are probably not triggering for most food addicts (including myself), they may be for some who are highly susceptible. Please use caution when trying these kinds of “grey area” products!

So that you may decide for yourself what you are comfortable with, here are the ingredients lists for each of these sauces. Potentially triggering ingredients are marked in red.

G Hughes Smokehouse Sugar Free BBQ Sauce (Hickory):

  • 0 grams of sugar per serving (2 tablespoons)
  • Crushed Tomatoes (Water, Crushed Tomatoes), Cider Vinegar, White Vinegar, Modified Cornstarch, Salt, Dehydrated Onion, Caramel Color, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Spices, Natural Flavor, Garlic Powder, Hickory Smoke, Xanthan Gum, Sucralose.

Stubbs Moppin’ Sauce (Bar-B-Q Baste):

  • 0 grams of sugar per serving (1 tablespoon)
  • Water, Soybean Oil, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Paprika, Spices, Corn Starch, Contains less than 2% of: Garlic, Cane Sugar, Tapioca Dextrin, Lecithin, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum.

Stubbs Texas Steakhouse Marinade (Ancho Chili & Garlic):

  • 1 gram of sugar per serving (1 tablespoon)
  • Water, Seasoning Blend, Onion, Brown Sugar, Paprika, Natural Tamarind Flavor, Vinegar Powder, Distilled Vinegar, Cane Sugar.

Woody’s Cook-in Sauce (BBQ Concentrate & Marinade):

  • 1 gram of sugar per serving (1 tablespoon)
  • Water, Unsalted Tomato Paste, Soy Oil, Spice (Garlic Powder, Mustard Flour, Black Pepper), Vinegar, Smoke Flavor (Aqueous Solution of Natural Hickory Wood Smoke Flavors), Salt, Sugar, Hot Sauce (Louisiana Hot Peppers, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Xanthan Gum), Worcestershire Flavor (Salt, Spices, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Flavors), Xanthan Gum, Caramel Color.

These sauces are great for some quick meals like Baked Beans with Coleslaw or 15-Minute BBQ Tempeh, or try slathering it on tofu, portobello mushrooms, or veggie skewers on the summer barbecue. If you are a meat-eater, obviously you know what to do with BBQ sauce.

Happy summer!
