BLE-Friendly Veggie Burger Brands

Notes on Veggie Burgers

  • All the burgers on this list are plant-based.
  • 4 oz of veggie burger equals 1 protein serving. Depending on the brand, sometimes this is more than one patty, sometimes this is exactly one patty, and sometimes this is less than one patty. Weigh before cooking or use the weight listed on the packaging.
  • Different brands of veggie burgers have different ratios of protein, grain, and veggies, but the reduction in the quantity from 6 oz (for a serving of beans) to 4 oz (for a serving of veggie burgers) accounts for this variation. You don’t need to worry about the exact composition and ratios of veggie burgers being perfect.
  • Some of these brands have a little bit of flour or sweetener, but all are after the first 3 ingredients. As always, know yourself and what can be triggering for you. Sugar and flour are marked with red in each of the ingredients lists below so that you can decide for yourself what allowances you are comfortable with.

Veggie Burgers to Avoid or Eat With Caution

The following brands of Veggie Burgers are more highly processed and contain sugar or flour. I will eat these on occasion (if there are no other options), but I have a preference for the less processed brands listed above.

  • MorningStar – DANGER! The first several ingredients are various types of flour.
  • Gardein Burgers – Nothing in the first 3 ingredients, but they are pretty processed and contain a fair amount of flour, sugar, and refined starches later on in the ingredients lists. Use at your own risk.
  • Gardenburger – Contains cane syrup and sugar, although not in the first 3 ingredients. I steer clear of them anyway because there are a lot of hard to pronounce ingredients. Use at your own risk.
  • Boca Burgers – No explicit sugar or flour, but highly processed. It’s hard to know exactly what is in these things. Use at your own risk.
  • 365 Everyday Value Meatless Burgers – Cane sugar is the 4th ingredient, and includes lots of highly processed soy. Use at your own risk.
  • Beyond Meat Beast Burgers – Delicious, vegan, and meaty, but highly processed. No explicit sugar or flour, but most of the ingredients are mysterious. Use at your own risk.

  1. Great info – thanks! What are your thoughts on the Gardein burgers?

    • Thanks Robin, I forgot about those! Just updated the post to include them. My thoughts are: No NMF in the first 3 ingredients, but they are pretty processed and contain a fair amount of flour, sugar, and refined starches later on in the ingredients lists. Use at your own risk.

  2. Thank you! This is great information considering that burger season is upon us and everyone is having picnics.

  3. What’s your favorite?? I’m curious!

  4. thanks for investing such a great amount of time on us…

  5. JJ Hoagland

Hey there. I went to purchase some of these but my question is wheat gluten or rice or quinoa or millet or whatnot is that ok to have or too close to flour? Are some of those items considered breakfast and therefore not good to have for anything but breakfast? Just curious your thoughts.

    • Good question. Those are all considered grains. We have no problem with grains in BLE. It’s the process of grinding and refining grains and starches into flour that triggers our addictive brains. Wheat gluten is fine (unless you have gluten sensitivities), and whole grains are fine.

  6. Laurie Lay

What do you think of the brand: Wildwood.
I got them at the grocery store in Temecula called Organic Roots.

  7. Tracey Sutton

    What about corn meal?

  8. What about black bean burgers sold at Costco?

  9. First, thanks so much for your wonderful blog! You mention in this blog to weigh the burger before cooking. I thought that we should always weigh our food after cooking….
Please clarify and thanks again for all you do.

  10. Hi – How is wheat gluten considered a BLE friendly food?

    • Hi Patty, we have no problem with wheat or grains here. It’s the process of grinding and refining grains and starches into flour that triggers our addictive brains. Wheat gluten is fine (unless you have gluten sensitivities). If you want to know more about the rationale check the frequently asked questions or write into support.

  11. What about Costco black bean burgers?

what about trader joe’s veggie burgers

    • I’ve never seen any vegan burgers at TJ’s, so I’ve never thought about it. It all depends on what’s in the ingredients list. Is there sugar or flour in the first 3 ingredients? If so, it’s a no. If it’s in later ingredients, it’s your judgement call.

  14. Elizabeth Diane

Thank you so much for this. It is sooo helpful!!!! I’d like to know “your” go to homemade veggie burger.

  15. Is this acceptable? Earth Grown Vegan Veggie Burgers – sold @ Aldi Supermarkets: ingredients in order: carrots, peas, whole oats, zucchini, edamame, corn, string bean, spinach, corn meal, onion, potato starch, soy protein flour, chickpeas, dried onion, salt, canola oil, red peppers, broccoli, garlic, parsley. • Depends on what program you follow, you’ll have to look at the guidelines for your food plan. I’m not an authority. I would eat them but you’ll have to decide for yourself. Look at the guidelines at the beginning of this blog post.
