My Bright Line Eating Path

If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know that I began my blogging journey as a devoted Bright Line Eater and BLE recipe guru, and that BLE has been instrumental in my developing a healthier and happier relationship with food. But if you’ve been following me more recently, you may also know that I’m not actually adhering to bright lines anymore.

So you may be wondering… Katie, why are you promoting Bright Line Eating if you don’t actually do Bright Line Eating anymore?

Good question.

I’ve been getting several e-mails today asking this very question, so I do want to address it. 

When I discovered Bright Line Eating in October of 2016, I was embroiled in mental obsessions about my weight and my eating behaviors. What and how much I ate and the size of my body felt out of control to me, and I desperately wanted to be able to manage them. BLE offered a clean, effective solution, and I dove headfirst into the BLE lifestyle.

Creating firm, clear boundaries with my food through Bright Line Eating served me well for several years, and opened up a world of new possibilities for growth and healing. Through their bootcamp, I dropped 70 pounds and learned some powerful lessons along the way. 

Bright Line Eating helped me become aware of my unconscious habits and patterns with food, and supported me in creating new, intentional, healthy eating behaviors. Eating according to a structured food plan taught me what appropriate portions of healthful foods looked like and how to prepare them. 

Meal by meal, I spent three years building a new, strong intuition about what healthy eating looked like and felt like. I learned to love eating abundant quantities of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. 

I also found some of my dearest friends in the Bright Line Eating community and built an invaluable support system. I gained exposure to the tools and coaching that I needed to begin doing deep inner work and personal growth. 

For me, however, weighing and measuring my food and abstaining from sugar and flour wasn’t the end-all-be-all. Gradually, I reached a point where I didn’t want the goal to be maintenance, but rather mastery. Mastery of my mind, thoughts, and food behaviors, with joy and freedom as the foundation.

Slowly, tentatively, while well supported and with one foot still in Bright Line Eating land, I began to explore schools of thought such as Mindful Eating, and Intuitive Eating. 

I am now choosing to cultivate the identity of a conscious, joyful, healthy eater. I am teaching myself to ask: “what would a healthy eater do?” when making my food decisions. By tuning into my body, mind, and hunger, I find it easier to make food choices spaciously and calmly, without impulsivity. If eating something particularly delicious sets off a series of cravings or doesn’t feel good in my body, I practice mindfulness, connection, self-compassion. I seek the lesson, and grow a little.

For today at least, I have learned to trust myself with food. I eat now when my body is hungry, and 95% of the food I eat is whole, unprocessed, delicious, plant-based food because that’s what I genuinely crave. I rarely crave processed food anymore, but when I do, I am able to enjoy indulging in them without fear, a shame spiral, or mental chatter. 

I am training my mind to watch calmly as my weight fluctuates, exploring what a healthy weight range looks like for my body. I am learning to find a stopping place with pleasurable foods, a place that I didn’t used to be able to find. But I didn’t get here overnight. It took gradual, supported, careful exploration to obtain the kind of peace and freedom I have with food today.

When I think back to where I was three years ago, it is clear that my relationship with food and eating has deeply, and truly shifted. But, I don’t think that shift would have been possible for me without the tools that I learned and self-awareness that I gained from doing Bright Line Eating.

Bright Line Eating was an important first step for me because I needed a hard reset with my food and with my life. The structured and supported world of Bright Line Eating can be easy to surrender to, and I needed a good surrender in order to make real changes. 

Bright Line Eating was the beginning, but not the end of my food freedom journey, and I promote it 100%.

At the end of the day BLE is a coaching program, not a diet, that supports people in taking a look at their relationship with food, making sustained behavior changes, becoming self aware and conscious of their choices, and helping people move forward on their right path.

So while it’s true that I don’t currently call myself a Bright Line Eater, I will absolutely continue to promote it. I will also continue to produce recipes and content that supports Bright Line Eaters, at whatever stage of their journey they are at, because I believe in the power of their programs to change lives.

      This resonates with me so strongly! I also found BLE when I was at in an unhealthy relationship with food, and, like you, I don’t want to feel that I now have to constantly “manage” my food. The other day I really wanted a slice of sourdough toast with marmalade for breakfast, and I spent the rest of the day convincing myself that that was somehow wrong. There was NO peace for me that day! So I’m drawn to some combo of BLE principles and intuitive eating. Katie’s Bright Kitchen might be the perfect “fit” for me!!

  6. Hi Katie Mae! I was blessed to be gifted with one of your cookbooks in my bootcamp package in 2017. It was so helpful in creating meals that were interesting and satisfying in my early days. So hard to get out of the mindset that food is sexy. I appreciate your explanation about your prospective on your BLE journey and find that I’m in a similar place. I’m not the author of the BLE bootcamp freebie you referred to though, just so you’re aware. To answer your question, I actually have near daily connection with my old MM buddies via Marco Polo. Possibly the most valuable lesson I learned from BLE (from the Reboot Rezoom course actually) was the importance of support and connection. It’s so key. Best wishes on your journey! <3

  11. Hi Katie, Just finished Day 13 of BLE Boot Camp. I am so glad I found your website. Your recipes are amazing and have made the transition to BLE so much easier! I am looking at Daily Readers. I see the ones listed in the Resources section of the Boot Camp website, but was wondering if you have any favorites? I can really relate to your post about BLE being what you needed initially, but then transitioning into exploring other options. I’m not sure if I’m a food addict, but staying within the bright lines is what I need right now. I too have 70 pounds to lose, well closer to 60 now. Not sure exactly until I weigh myself this week!

    • Hi Rita, I love that you’re hesitant to take on the identity of “food addict,” bright lines can be so helpful for so many reasons whether or not you buy into that story, I love that you are choosing BLE from that empowered place of knowing that it’s serving you right now. So great. I can’t think of any daily readers I would recommend, I usually just read a few pages from various spiritual/personal growth texts that I connect with, my favorites right now are anything by Pema Chodron, Zen Mind Beginners Mind, and Eat to Love by Jenna Hollenstein.
